Yamantaka (Sanskrit: "Yamantaka", Tibetan: "Dorje Jigje"), also known as Vajra of Terror, is the core principal deity of the Gelugpa Sect and the wrathful incarnation of Manjushri Bodhisattva. With a fierce and solemn appearance, it is a classic thangka theme for subduing evil, protecting good, and dispelling ignorance, suitable for enshrinement, collection and home protection, carrying wishes for warding off disasters and ensuring smoothness.
I. Identity & Background
"Yamantaka" signifies great power and noble merits. To subdue Yama, the god of death who slaughtered all beings, Manjushri Bodhisattva manifested in his wrathful form. After defeating Yama, he took him as a Dharma protector, hence earning the title "Conqueror of Death". As a principal deity of the Anuttarayoga Tantra in Tibetan Esotericism, it ranks among the Three Principal Deities of the Gelugpa Sect alongside Chakrasamvara and Guhyasamaja. Often depicted in thangkas with nine faces, thirty-four arms and sixteen legs, its image has been passed down as a classic of Tibetan Buddhist art.
II. Meanings & Functions
1. Subdue Evil & Remove Obstacles: Subdue evil spirits and bad luck, protecting homes and individuals from disasters and interference of evil thoughts.
2. Disperse Confusion & Ignite Wisdom: Blessed by Manjushri's wisdom, it helps people distinguish right from wrong and avoid detours.
3. Protect Career: Overcome career obstacles and competitions, enhance courage, and safeguard achievements.
4. Extend Life & Ensure Health: Having subdued the god of death, it possesses life-prolonging power, protecting physical and mental health and warding off accidents.
