White Jambhala (Tibetan: "Tsang Lha Kar Po") is the core deity among the Five Wealth Gods in Tibetan Buddhism. As an incarnation of Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva, he is sent to deliver all beings from poverty. This auspicious thangka theme blesses wealth luck and dispels destitution, making it ideal for enshrinement, collection, and gifting.
I. Identity and Background
Legend has it that the Indian master Atisha came across a dying beggar during his journeys. He intended to cut his own flesh to save the beggar, but the offer was refused. Moved by this compassion, Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva shed tears of mercy, and the tear from his right eye manifested as White Jambhala riding a green dragon. White Jambhala made a vow to free all beings from poverty, passed his practice method to Atisha, and this practice later spread to Tibet. His image has been depicted on thangkas and handed down through generations.
